  8. For Skulptur Projekte 1987, Matt Mullican (*1951) conceived the large-scale, ground-based sculpture “Untitled (Sculpture for the Chemical Institutes)”. At the time, the artist selected an intimate, rather obscure location between three buildings belonging to the University of Münster’s Chemical Institutes. He positioned a ground-based relief consisting in total of 35 dark, square granite slabs on the lawn, resulting in an eight by twelve metre rectangular configuration. The artist left a square that was devoid of signs and shapes in the middle of the work. It was around this centre that he arranged the other panels, sandblasting various motifs onto them.
  9. In response to recent developments in urban planning, the sculpture gets another location. However, before the work is moved to the PharmaCampus, the museum is carrying out a restoration of weather and age related damage to the work. The public restoration continues explorations of the work’s biography and of sculpture within urban space.

Hans Blumenberg - Network of Exhibitions

  2. Thinking in Metaphors
  3.

July 11 –  Oktober 4, 2020

The network of exhibitions is a cooperation between University of Münster, LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur and Westfälischer Kunstverein on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Hans Blumenberg.

  1. Blumenberg Centenary
  2. Hist Writings and their Influence on the Arts
  3. Images, myths, metaphors - they serve as a yardstick and orientation for people in the face of the challenges of the present. This insight became the leitmotif of the philosopher Hans Blumenberg (1920-1996), who taught as professor of philosophy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster from 1970 until his retirement in 1985 and would have celebrated his 100th birthday on 13 July 2020. He thus, for the first time, ascribed to images a power of action and structuring force that had previously been reserved for ratio.

Blumenberg's most important writings can be found in the five volumes of Metaphorology. Through his radical expansion of the history of ideas, which allowed him to make references to poetry, imagination and fiction, his writings met with a broad readership, especially in the fields of the visual arts, art history and literary studies. Published in 1979, "Schiffbruch mit Zuschauer" (Shipwreck with Spectator) met with a lively and at the same time productive reception, especially among artists of the 1980s. The enormous as well as versatile potential for stimulation offered by Blumenberg's writings is demonstrated, for example, in the works of Harald Klingelhöller, Ludger Gerdes, Ulf Aminde, Marcel Odenbach, which explicitly establish references and quote and, above all, update them against the background of current political constellations and developments in the history of mankind.

The exhibition spans a fine network of connections between sculptures in the public space of Münster (Ludger Gerdes, Harald Klingelhöller), related archive materials and models in the State Museum (Ludger Gerdes), a video installation visible day and night in the Kunstverein (Marcel Odenbach), as well as a presentation of publications in the University of Münster.

Presentation from the Skulptur Projekte Archives 2020-2021

  1.
  2. Ludger Gerdes' Ship for Münster

In 1987 Gerdes participated with the ship for Münster in the Skulptur Projekte in Münster. For his contribution he set up an installation in the form of a ship approaching Münster. As location he chose a little urban, green suburban landscape at the Kinderbach, at that time still overlooking the city center. His artistic exploration of Hans Blumenberg's philosophy can be traced in his work and in the archive files. The metaphor contained in the ship motif appears timeless and red-hot at the same time: the mainland serves mankind to establish its institutions, while his existence can be traced in the movement of a ship.

This publication appears as part of the research project "The Skulptur Projekte Archives in Münster: A Research Institution for Scholars and the Public" as part of its ‘Research in Museums’ funding initiative, supported by the Volkswagen Foundation. The project is based on a three-year cooperation between the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur and the University of Münster.

  10. Public sphere and participation are foundations of every democracy and of an open society. They define the positioning and development of an unconventional exhibition format: Skulptur Projekte in Münster. The publication Public Matters gathers the findings of a three-year research project dealing with the Skulptur Projekte Archives, based on a collaboration between the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur and the University of Münster, and funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. With essays, case studies, statements, and conversations, as well as abundant previously unpublished materials, Public Matters opens up perspectives on an internationally significant body of archival holdings related to art in the public space, and it reflects on aesthetic and curatorial practices’ relevance for creating the public sphere.

  1. THE PUBLIC MATTERS, with the artist collective Projekt 2077
  2. Exhibition project, November 29, 2019 – November 15, 2020
  3. The exhibition THE PUBLIC MATTERS shows how closely utopia and dystopia are connected. On the occasion of the publication PUBLIC MATTERS, which resulted from a three-year research project on the Skulptur Projekte Archives, the artist collective Projekt 2077 developed an ambivalent vision of the future of  Skulptur Projekte in 2077. In an eight-channel video-installation, surrounded by an extensive color intervention, the collective offers an artistic-associative access to the archive material. The result is a dense collage of quotations from old correspondences, current voices and artistic models. Not infrequently, the collective reacts parodically to current art politics. At the same time, Project 2077 draws the uneasy idea of a future in which, as a result of the influence of Big Data, people are  isolated and seek healing in art projects. A scenario that raises questions by designing answers.

  4. The location of a work is more than just the mere site of its installation or a dot on a map of the city. Artistic works transform their spatial surroundings and create places of their own. Situational spaces and passages come about, venues for assembly and interaction, refuges, heterotopies. With the aid of selected works from the history of the Skulptur Projekte, the archive presentation investigates the emergence of communicative spaces and the reciprocal relationship between the work and its location.
  5. The exhibition comprises extensive documentation and archival material such as concepts, letters, drafts, drawings, historical photographs, and film footage.

  8. Michael Asher (1943–2012) participated in all four editions of Skulptur Projekte between 1977 and 2007. With each invitation to Münster his response was to engage in an intensive artistic interaction with the city, the exhibition and his own work: a “double check” at ten-year intervals, as Asher called it. The 2017 presentation from the Skulptur Projekte Archives’ shows historical documents and contemporary material as well as the artistic dialogue with Asher’s contributions by the photographer Alexander Rischer (*1968). For his series Münster. 19 Orte (Münster. 19 sites) from 2016 Rischer revisited the caravan’s respective locations in Asher’s project with an inquiring gaze. The result was a series of 19 photographs that not only examines the changes and particularities of these urban settings but also reflects on the Caravan project from a personal perspective.

In 1977 Asher was invited for the first time to take part with a project in Skulptur Ausstellung in Münster. He started by making a number of proposals such as planting trees or digging a tunnel, before deciding on installing a caravan, model: Hymer – Eriba Familia. Each week he parked it in a different location in and around Münster. Colourful paper stubs available in the museum foyer and his catalogue entry gave information on where the caravan was parked at any particular time.

In 1987, Skulptur Projekte was held for a second time. In response to being invited again, Asher once more submitted several proposals in the run-up to the exhibition. But he was particularly attracted by the possibility of re-installing his previous caravan work. For him, a crucial precondition for doing this was to hire exactly the same model of vehicle as the one in 1977, which he then intended to park in the same spots as he had done ten years earlier. If logistical reasons now proscribed using the same location the caravan was parked in a garage for that week.

From 1997 onwards, the caravan installation developed wide-reaching critical potential. By repeating the project yet again Asher was subverting the mechanisms of the art market system. The archives’ documents reveal to an increasing degree the difficulties and administrative effort incurred by his implementation of this work since in the meantime the caravan had become a vintage model.

The fourth edition of Skulptur Projekte in 2007 was marked by a generational shift. Together with Kasper König, the curatorial team was made up of Brigitte Franzen and Carina Plath. After it was decided that the caravan project should be carried out a fourth time, the documentation from the previous three editions served as a working basis for the project’s preparations. Due to insufficient exhibition permits and a reduced exhibition duration the caravan was now presented only rarely in public space, whereas the photographic documentation took up a considerable part of the exhibition catalogue. Its juxtaposed photographs revealed, in particular, how much the respective locations had changed over a period of three decades.

  8. With its exhibition Autonomous and profane. Skulptur Projekte on the terrain of the church the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur in Münster is launching a new serial exhibition format for the Skulptur Projekte Archives. This exhibition series will focus on individual artistic standpoints and examine them in detail in relation to an underlying thematic thread. The emphasis of the first exhibition lies on four projects with a critical approach to the church or symbols and sites linked to it. In this respect the church can serve as an architectural background and venue as well as the direct subject of artistic scrutiny.
  9. One standpoint examined in this first exhibition is Katharina Fritsch’s Madonna from 1987. Fritsch placed her yellow reproduction of an effigy of the Our Lady of Lourdes in Salzstrasse, Münster’s main shopping street, between Karstadt department store and Dominican Church. The provocative choice of location between a department store and a church challenged the instrumentalisation of religious faith for commerce and kitsch. Both the course of the Madonna exhibition and the damage done to the figure are vividly documented with visual material, correspondence, filed memoranda and a series of newspaper articles. Furthermore a four-minute film from the LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen will be screened, in particular showing the response of passers-by to the work.
  10. In another standpoint, the exhibition considers Lothar Baumgarten’s Das gestürzte Kreuz / Drei Irrlichter (The Fallen Crucifix / Three Will-’o-the-Wisps) from 1987. Baumgarten’s project proposals centred on the period of Anabaptist Reformation. Inspired by the iconoclasm of 1534 he developed the proposal for Das gestürzte Kreuz for Überwasserkirche. But the church rejected his idea of constructing an abstract crucifix on the roof using dark tiles that would stand out against its surface. Baumgarten’s second proposal, however, was realised. Under the title Drei Irrlichter he installed three light bulbs inside the cages that are still attached to Lamberti Church. Photographs, sketches and plans for both project proposals are now on public display for the first time.
  11. For Skulptur Projekte 1997 Ayşe Erkmen developed altogether four proposals, all of which involved Münster Cathedral. The focus of all four was on the cathedral’s west wing. After the first three had been rejected the fourth proposal, Sculptures on Air, found approval since it did not seek to use the grounds of the cathedral but the airspace above it.
  12. A helicopter was used to fly sculptures in turns from the collection of the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur and bring them face to face with Münster Cathedral. Draft designs and computer simulations relating to the project will be shown, offering a survey of Erkman’s proposals, as well as photographs of the flying sculptures and correspondence about the project’s development.
  13. The fourth standpoint shown in the exhibition is Isa Genzken’s contribution Ohne Titel (Untitled) for Skulptur Projekte 2007. For her project the artist chose the forecourt of Überwasserkirche, one of Münster’s oldest churches. Flanking the south façade she installed a series of objects which at first sight brought to mind children’s playtime and happy holidays. Yet what looked like a haphazard arrangement proved on closer inspection to be a metaphor for social injustice. Furthermore, especially in the light of the current refugee problem and in conjunction with the question of the right to asylum, Genzken’s exploration of power relations and spheres of influence between church, state and, is acutely topical. The project is documented with photographic material, including shots taken in Isa Genzken’s studio and brief accompanying notes by the artist. A precise selection of archival papers and documents illustrates the work’s intention and message.
  14. In addition, on the first floor of the atrium the exhibition presents a recent interview with Father Thomas Frings who works in Münster. The interview spells out the church’s fundamental approach to art on its own terrain, also discussing specific artistic standpoints. Moreover, the exhibition includes a display of catalogues from all previous Skulptur Projekte exhibitions in Münster.

  8. From the very beginning, the planning and organization of Skulptur Projekte has been in the hands of the LWL-Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte. Thanks to the exhibitions, the museum has become the proud owner not only of thirty-nine important international outdoor sculptures, which are permanently presented in the urban space or in the museum. The State Museum also houses a substantial but up until now little known collection of preliminary artistic materials, including models, blueprints, design drawings, correspondence, and commentaries as well as a collection focus in the museum’s library. Today, most of the nearly 175 participating artists have developed groundbreaking works, including Isa Genzken’s very first outdoor work, ABC (1987), of which only the model, sketches and blueprints exist. Also Joseph Beuys’ Unschlitt (1977), Dan Graham’s pavilion Oktogon (1987) which we will reconstruct for this year’s exhibition, Michael Asher’s Caravan installation (1977-2007), Richard Serra’s Trunk (1987), Sol Lewitt’s For the Missing Jews (1987) or Jorge Pardo’s Pier (1997) and Janet Cardiff’s Walk for Münster I and II (1997) have been developed particularly for Skulptur Projekte.
  9. The exhibition 77/87/97/07 archive accompanies skulptur projekte münster 07, this exciting and one-of-a-kind collection will be open to the public for the first time. The archive exhibition displays models of realized projects – including Claes Oldenburg’s Poolballs (1977), Richard Tuttle’s work Untitled (1986) or Rosemarie Trockel’s Less sauvage than others (2007) – as well as models of unrealized works by artists such as Katharina Fritsch or Olaf Metzel (both 1987). The design drawings and correspondence provide important background information on artistic decisions and the approaches taken to public and visual cultures and the question of sculptural form. Selected newspaper articles document the vivid, occasionally controversial public debates triggered by each edition of the Skulptur Projekte to date. This extensive collection represents an invaluable and art historically outstanding resource, documenting the creative process and the individual artist’s approaches to the topics of “urban space,” “art in public places,” and “outdoor sculptures” of the past thirty years as well as its reception.
